Max Pescatori, "The Italian Pirate," Won the 2006 WSOP $2,500 No-Limit Event

By Eric Luu

Max Pescatori won his first WSOP bracelet in the $2,500 No-Limit Event last Sunday, beating a field of 1,290 contestants. As the winner of the event, Pescatori, also known as "The Italian Pirate," was awarded a generous $682,389. All this on the same day as Italy, his home country, won the World Cup. Could anyone ask for more?

Coming into the final table, Anthony Reategui was by far the overwhelming chip leader. As the game progressed, Reategui managed to knock out five of the first six players, consolidating his advance even further. With only three players remaining at the table, Reategui had more than twice the number of chips as the two other players combined. Specifically, Reategui had $2,300,000 chips, compared to $630,000 and $295,000 for Justin Pechie and Pescatori respectively. The situation slowly reversed, however, as Pescatori, with less than $200,000, tripled up and managed to boot Pechie out of the game with four 8s.

As the heads-up began, Pescatori was still trailing Reategui by far, as they each held $875,000 and $2,340,000 respectively. The seemingly huge disadvantage would not be sufficient, however, to discourage Pescatori who would slowly climb up the ladder to finally win the event with a straight on the last hand.

Following is the final standing for the 2006 WSOP $2,500 No-Limit Event:
1) Max Pescatori - $682,389
2) Anthony Reategui - $356,040
3) Justin Pechie - $206,207
4) Michael Scott - $148,350
5) Corey Cheresnick - $118,640
6) Tri "Chico" Ma - $103,845
7) Mike Matusow - $89,010
8) Terrence Chan - $74,175
9) Matt Heintschel - $66,758
